Professor Dr. Orhan Şen, a specialist in Neurosurgery, stated that the increase in technology has led to a rise in inactivity, which triggers back and neck pain. He noted that improper seating arrangements and choices of furniture also contribute to discomfort. Şen emphasized the importance of encouraging children to engage in sports from a young age and highlighted the significance of being active for at least 30-60 minutes daily.
With the advancement of technology, the increase in inactivity has triggered back and neck pain, said Brain, Nerve, and Spinal Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen, "Our society has become increasingly inactive. In the past, there was movement in villages and neighborhoods, but now none of that remains. To avoid diseases like herniated discs in the back and neck in older age and to prevent obesity, we must stay active," he said.
While advancing technology makes life easier, staring at phone, tablet, and computer screens for long periods has increased inactivity. The hours spent in front of screens and incorrect sitting positions have led to an increase in spinal disorders. Experts stated that the number of people seeking medical help for back and neck pain has significantly increased in recent years.
"IN THE PAST, THERE WAS MOVEMENT IN VILLAGES AND NEIGHBORHOODS"
Regarding the issue, Brain, Nerve, and Spinal Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen spoke to İhlas News Agency reporters. Prof. Dr. Şen stated, "Back and neck pain has increased in recent years. The biggest reason for this is inactivity. Our society has become increasingly inactive. In the past, there was movement in villages and neighborhoods. However, now children remain inactive at their desks. Children used to play games and go outside during breaks from their studies, but now none of that remains. They spend time on computers, tablets, and mobile phones," he expressed.
"NOT EVERY ERGONOMIC CHAIR AND SOFA PROVIDES THE SAME BENEFIT"
Pointing out that not all ergonomic chairs and sofas are suitable for everyone, Prof. Dr. Şen said, "Inactivity, along with poor chair and bed choices, has increased complaints of back and neck pain in recent years. Not every ergonomic chair and sofa sold provides the same beneficial effect for everyone. This is something to be mindful of," he stated.
"CHILDREN SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO PLAY SPORTS"
Prof. Dr. Şen emphasized that children should be encouraged to engage in sports from a young age, saying, "Our children will certainly study and spend time on the computer, but they should not be inactive. We should guide our children towards swimming or other sports. We need to instill this discipline. To avoid diseases like herniated discs in the back and neck in older age and to prevent obesity, we must stay active. We should encourage children to love sports from a young age," he said.
Şen also noted that everyone should engage in at least 30-60 minutes of activity daily, and that people should not request deliveries from markets but should go to the market and do their shopping themselves for better health.
