Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara made statements by attending a meeting held at the former opposition headquarters. Al-Shara harshly criticized the more than 100 businessmen who arrived at the meeting in luxury vehicles, saying, "I didn't know the state paid such high salaries! Have you forgotten that you are the children of the revolution? Did you fall from grace so quickly?"
Two people who spoke to Reuters stated that Al-Shara made these remarks after seeing the luxury vehicles outside.
FACED SERIOUS PROBLEMS IN THE FIRST 10 MONTHS OF HIS RULE
After overthrowing Bashar al-Assad in a 14-year civil war, Al-Shara faced serious problems in the first ten months of his rule. In the ongoing sectarian conflicts among the former opposition groups in the new administration, homes were looted, and more than 2,000 people were killed.
SOME PARTICIPANTS HANDED OVER THEIR KEYS
According to two public officials, at the meeting held in Idlib on August 30, Al-Shara warned civil servants to "hand over their luxury vehicles, otherwise they would face a corruption investigation." It was reported that some participants handed over their keys after the meeting.
"WILL STRUGGLE TO CHANGE THE CORRUPTION REGIME"
Experts say that Al-Shara's biggest challenge is to change the entrenched corruption regime while transitioning from Assad's ousted leadership to state governance.
MINISTRY: NO TOLERANCE WILL BE SHOWN
In a statement from the Syrian Ministry of Information regarding the issue, it was emphasized that there would be absolutely no tolerance for suspicions of corruption among state employees.
