Geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür issued a frightening warning regarding the earthquake risk in Bursa. Görür stated, "The ground of Bursa's flat plain area is weak, there is a high level of groundwater, and it is close to the surface, which makes it highly susceptible to damage during an earthquake."
Geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated that Bursa should focus on becoming an earthquake-resistant city.
NACI GÖRÜR'S STATEMENT ON "BURSA"
Geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, in his speech at the "Seismicity of Bursa and Earthquake-Resistant Osmangazi" program organized by Osmangazi Municipality at the Osmangazi Exhibition Center, noted that local governments need to work in cooperation with the central government for Bursa to become an earthquake-resistant city.
Görür emphasized that a change in mindset should be subjected to scientific methods, stating: "You either accept these methods or you don't. If you do not accept this with all your being and thought, and if you do not internalize the culture they foresee, it means our future will always be problematic. That is, when an earthquake occurs, we will cry, mourn, and bury our loved ones until the next earthquake. Of course, we will forget and move on. Whenever the next earthquake occurs, the same problem will be experienced again."
"BURSA'S GROUND IS WEAK"
Görür emphasized that thousands of people have lost their lives due to earthquakes and that the problem has been passed down from generation to generation, stating that earthquakes have occurred in Turkey for 14 million years and will continue for millions of years. He pointed out that there are fault lines threatening Bursa, saying, "The ground of Bursa's flat plain area is weak, with excessive groundwater close to the surface, which can cause the most damage during an earthquake. We must concentrate on making this city earthquake-resistant."
Osmangazi Mayor Erkan Aydın also pointed out that earthquakes have been occurring for years and will continue to do so, emphasizing that everyone must fulfill their responsibilities in this regard. After the speech, Aydın presented a plaque to Prof. Dr. Görür. The program also featured an exhibition of photographs taken during the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes, which was opened for visitors.
