Severe rains in Brazil's West Java and Ubá region caused a sudden flood disaster. Waters overflowing from a funeral home swept dozens of coffins into the streets. Due to extreme weather conditions, 7 people lost their lives in Ubá.
Severe rains affecting West Java, Ubá, and surrounding areas of Brazil have led to death and destruction. In a sudden flood disaster, waters overflowing from a funeral home dragged dozens of coffins through the streets. Those moments were captured on camera; in the footage, fast-flowing muddy waters are seen sweeping away the coffins, while the person behind the camera shouted, "Oh my God!"
During the flood, coffins passed right next to electric poles and traffic lights, while the effects of heavy rain continued in the area. In Ubá, where the funeral home is located, 7 people lost their lives due to extreme weather conditions. Storms that have affected the region since Monday have caused sudden floods that destroyed homes and businesses.
After the disaster, authorities declared a state of emergency. While schools and daycare centers were closed, rescue teams continued their efforts to deliver emergency aid to those affected by the flood. Ubá municipality officials stated, "Families have lost everything. Homes, memories, lives have been turned upside down in just a few hours."
The city most affected in the state of Minas Gerais was Juiz de Fora. Here, the death toll has risen to 30. In the area where heavy rain continues, officials stated that the chances of finding anyone who can still survive are low.
A 43-year-old woman named Josiane Aparecida, one of those affected by the disaster, recounted that she lost her aunt in a landslide and that her cousin was taken to the hospital but later passed away. Aparecida is still searching through the rubble for her cousin's two children, aged 6 and 9, and her cousin's boyfriend.
Nearby, the body of a man was found. Before he died, he had managed to save his wife just before their home was destroyed by the landslide.
Experts indicate that the increase in these disasters affecting Brazil is linked to the effects of global warming. In the flood disasters in southern Brazil in 2024, more than 200 people lost their lives, and over two million people were displaced from their homes. Two years ago, in a major flood disaster in Petropolis, 241 people lost their lives.
