Algeria has added Russian-made Su-57E Felon fighter jets to its inventory; as deliveries continue gradually under a contract for 12 aircraft, the country has risen to the position of the first state in North Africa to possess fifth-generation fighter jets.
Russian-made Su-57 fighter jets were spotted in Algeria. In photos and videos shared on social media, five fifth-generation Su-57E Felon fighter jets can be seen flying in the skies of Algeria. With this development, Algeria becomes the first user of the Su-57 outside of Russia and the first country in North Africa to possess a fifth-generation fighter jet.
THEY ENTERED THE INVENTORY
According to information provided by Defence Blog, the Su-57E aircraft have entered the inventory of the Algerian Air Force. Thus, Algeria has significantly increased its air power in the region. The Su-57E Felon is known as Russia's most advanced fighter jet platform, featuring low visibility (stealth), advanced radar systems, and long-range munitions capacity.
AGREEMENT FOR 12 AIRCRAFT AND DELIVERY SCHEDULE
An agreement covering the procurement of 12 Su-57s was signed between Algeria and Russia in November 2024. According to the agreement, deliveries are planned to be phased:
2025: 2 units
2026: 6 units
2028: 4 units
In line with this schedule, the aircraft are expected to be gradually integrated into the Algerian inventory.
SPARE PARTS AND FLEET SUPPORT
According to the plan, the supply of export parts for the Su-57 Felon and Su-34 fleets is targeted between 2024-2026. This step indicates a large-scale defense cooperation that encompasses not only platform delivery but also operational sustainability.
The induction of Su-57s into service by Algeria is considered a development that directly affects the military balance in North Africa. When considering the modernization processes of the air forces of other countries in the region, this move has strategically elevated Algeria to a new level.
