Sudan Fully Scraps Fuel Subsidies

09.06.2021 18:27

Move is part of economic reforms in Sudan.

Sudan fully scrapped fuel subsidies, according to a statement by the Ministry of Energy and Oil on Wednesday.

The statement said fuel prices to customers will be determined by fuel distribution companies in the country.

The decision saw the price of gasoline shoot up from 150 Sudanese pounds ($0.35) per liter to 290 pounds ($0.68), a 93.3 percent increase, while diesel went up from 125 ($0.29) to 285 pounds ($0.67).

On Tuesday, the Sudanese authorities hiked fuel prices by more than 100 percent as part of economic reforms agreed with the IMF.

In October 2020, the government announced a gradual lifting of fuel subsidies as part of economic reforms in the country.
