At the beginning of the meeting, where Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Özdemir and representatives from the Turkish War Disabled Veterans, Martyrs, Widows and Orphans Association, the Turkish Veterans and Martyrs Families Foundation, the Turkish Martyrs' Relatives and Veterans Solidarity Foundation, the Police Organization Duty Disabled and Martyrs Families Foundation, and the Diyarbakır Mothers will speak, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş made a brief assessment.
"IF WE CAN TALK ABOUT A TERROR-FREE TURKEY, WE OWE IT TO OUR MARTYRS"
Reminding that the first group to be heard by the commission will be the relatives of martyrs and veterans, Kurtulmuş stated that this decision was made with the consensus of the commission members. Stating that a historic period has begun with the PKK terrorist organization's decision to dissolve itself, Kurtulmuş said, "If today we can talk about a Turkey where there is no longer any terrorism, we primarily owe this to our martyrs. We commemorate our heroic martyrs, each of whom sacrificed their lives for this homeland, this flag, this country with great dedication. If it weren't for their resolute stance, this meeting would not have taken place, and perhaps this commission would not exist. It would not have been possible to discuss and address issues regarding the future of our country so freely," he said.
"WE WILL LIVE TOGETHER IN THIS COUNTRY AS BROTHERS"
Kurtulmuş, who stated that he hears the phrase "May the homeland be safe" from all families at the martyr funerals he attended, said, "'May the homeland be safe' has become a motto, a prayer passed down from generation to generation. Our homeland has not been divided. We will live together in this country as brothers," he said.
Stating that veterans also deserve great praise, Kurtulmuş used the expression, "'If I die, I am a martyr; if I survive, I am a veteran' are our veterans who go to the battlefield and are entrusted to our nation."
"THERE HAS BEEN NO BARGAINING AT ANY POINT IN THIS PROCESS"
Kurtulmuş also added that there has been no bargaining in this process, saying: "At no point in this process; from the very beginning, there has been no bargaining or exchange. I say this once again in front of our veterans and the families of martyrs, in front of 86 million."
"THERE ARE THOSE WHO TRY TO POISON THE PROCESS"
Kurtulmuş, stating that the Parliament will do its utmost to build eternal brotherhood without any bargaining, also issued a warning and said: "It is evident that there are those who strive for there to be no peace in Turkey. It is known that there will be those who try to poison this process both inside and outside. We need to continue on our path by tightening our ranks."
