After the downing of a U.S. Air Force fighter jet in Kuwait, the American pilot who parachuted to the ground faced the risk of being attacked by civilians. The incident occurred following the accidental downing of three U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets. Six U.S. servicemen landed safely and were transported to secure areas.
An incident in Kuwait revealed the on-ground reflections of the increasing tension in the region. After an American fighter jet belonging to the U.S. Air Force was shot down, the American pilot who parachuted to the ground faced the risk of being attacked by nearby civilians. Footage of those moments quickly spread on social media.
The footage shows the pilot, who has just landed, trying to free himself from his parachute while a group of men approaches him, shouting. It is notable that one person in the group is carrying a metal pipe and appears to be preparing to attack. The pilot can be heard repeatedly shouting "Get back!" to protect himself.
At the most critical moment of the incident, the pilot kneels down and raises his hands in the air. He then loudly shouts, "I am American." Upon hearing these words, the aggressive behavior suddenly ceases, the person with the pipe steps back, and the group moves away from the area. Initially, it was believed that the pilot was Iranian, which is considered the reason for him being targeted.
According to information provided by officials, the incident occurred after a military accident described as "friendly fire" in Kuwaiti airspace. Three F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets belonging to the U.S. Air Force were mistakenly hit by Kuwaiti air defense systems during military operations against Iran.
After the planes crashed, pilots and weapon systems officers ejected from the aircraft using ejection seats. A total of six U.S. soldiers landed safely and were later transported to secure areas. The U.S. Central Command announced that all personnel are in good health.
In other footage shared on social media, a different pilot is seen smiling at Kuwaiti civilians who came to help him, while another pilot is shown being protected by security forces.
The incident occurred on the third day of escalating military tension between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Following attacks targeting U.S. bases in the region, security measures have been increased in Gulf countries.
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense announced that an investigation has been launched regarding the incident, while the U.S. side reported that the technical and operational aspects of the event are being thoroughly examined. It has also been learned that the alert level at U.S. bases in the region has been raised.
Experts say the incident once again highlighted how quickly the war atmosphere in the Middle East can spiral out of control and how dangerous misunderstandings on the ground can be.
