The Portuguese bullfighting arena recently witnessed a great tragedy. The famous bullfighter Manuel Maria Trindade, only 22 years old, lost his life after being attacked by a giant bull during his first major show at the Campo Pequeno arena in the capital, Lisbon.

During the show, a 680-kilogram bull quickly charged at the young fighter. Trindade tried to catch the animal's horns but was unsuccessful. The bull lifted the young fighter into the air and threw him against the wall. Thousands of people in the arena witnessed the terrifying moments.

Health teams immediately intervened, and Trindade was taken to the hospital. The young athlete, who was placed in an artificial coma in intensive care, unfortunately passed away the next day due to heart and respiratory failure.

Audience in Shock: 73-Year-Old Doctor Dies

The magnitude of the tragedy did not stop there. Vasco Morais Batista, a 73-year-old orthopedic specialist watching the moments from the stands, collapsed from a heart attack. The unfortunate doctor, who was taken to the hospital by ambulance, could not be saved due to an aortic aneurysm.

Portuguese Tradition: Bulls Are Not Killed in the Arena

Trindade was one of the young bullfighters who continued the "forcado" tradition unique to Portugal. Forcados try to stop the bull by grabbing its horns without any protection or weapons. This tradition has been ongoing in the country for centuries.

Unlike Spain, bulls are not killed in the arena in Portugal. According to a law in effect since 1836, bulls are either sent to the slaughterhouse or continue to live on farms as breeding stock if deemed "brave."

Family of Fighters

Despite his young age, Trindade was a beloved figure and a member of the São Manços bullfighting group. His father had also served as a forcado in the same group years ago.

The company organizing the show expressed its condolences to the family and all loved ones after the young bullfighter's death.
