In a 12-hour attack carried out by Russia, described as one of the largest of the war, Ukraine's capital Kyiv suffered heavy destruction. As hundreds of missiles and drones targeted the city, it was left in ruins, and the severity of the attack became evident with aerial photographs taken at dawn.
Russia launched one of the heaviest attacks of the war early Sunday morning. Hundreds of drones and missiles were fired at many regions, including the capital Kiev. At least 4 people lost their lives, and more than 80 were injured.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia used 595 drones and 48 missiles in the 12-hour attack. The Ukrainian air defense managed to shoot down 568 drones and 43 missiles. Nevertheless, the attacks caused significant damage to residential areas, factories, and energy infrastructure.
SIRENS SOUNDED FOR 7 HOURS
Siren alarms sounded in Kiev for about seven hours. This was recorded as one of the longest and most intense air attacks experienced in the capital so far. During the attack, Poland temporarily closed its airspace along the southeastern border and scrambled fighter jets.
This step has once again raised the risk of the conflict spilling over into NATO territory. The attack demonstrated that Russia could continue large-scale air operations despite international sanctions and losses. As Ukraine's air defense appears to be increasingly struggling, the need for additional military support from the West has become an urgent agenda.
ENERGY CRISIS BEFORE WINTER
The damage to energy facilities could exacerbate electricity outages in Ukraine before winter. President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated calls for tougher energy sanctions against Moscow.
