The Central Bank will impose new restrictions on the production of coins due to rising costs. The mint, which halted the production of 10 kuruş and 25 kuruş coins last year, is reportedly preparing to stop the production of 50 kuruş coins as well in the last months of the year.
While high inflation in Turkey continues to create difficulties in the use of cash, the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) is not taking steps regarding the printing of new banknotes. Experts warn that the introduction of new denominations could increase the data on the "informal economy."
THE PRINTING OF 50 KURUS IS BEING TERMINATED
On the other hand, significant developments are taking place with coins as well. It is claimed that the Mint, which halted the production of 10 and 25 kuruş coins last year due to rising costs, plans to terminate the printing of 50 kuruş coins in the last months of the year for similar reasons. According to economists, the production cost of a 50 kuruş coin exceeds 3 TL, while 4.3 TL is spent on printing a 1 TL coin.
5 TL COINS WILL BECOME MORE COMMON
In this process, it is aimed that the 5 TL coins, which were released in limited quantities, will become more common in the future. However, citizens will still be able to use their 10, 25, and 50 kuruş coins. Experts also emphasize that these coins, whose production has been discontinued, may gain collectible value in the coming years.
