A game spreading on social media under the name 'trend' is putting children's lives at risk. In this so-called game known as 'choking game,' children apply pressure to each other's throats until they are on the verge of fainting. Experts are warning families against this dangerous trend that starts off as innocent fun.

'Choking game' is a so-called game that spreads rapidly, where children apply pressure to each other's throats until they reach the point of fainting. Pediatric Cardiologist Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Yozgat and Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Reyhan Tamer issued important warnings.

"BLOOD FLOW IS DECREASING"

Stating that the aorta, which exits from the heart, extends along the neck to nourish the brain, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Yozgat said, "When children press on these exit areas, the blood flow to the brain decreases. This situation is not limited to just the reduction of blood flow. There are special receptors called 'carotid sinus' at the roots of the vessels that exit from the neck. When pressure is applied to these areas, the heart slows down, the vessels dilate, and blood pressure drops. If children apply pressure to their necks, both the blood flow to the brain decreases and the stimulation of these receptors increases the likelihood of severe brain damage."

"THE GAME STARTED TO BE POPULAR IS TURNING INTO PEER BULLYING"

Stating that these games, which are attempted to gain popularity among friends through social media, pose great risks even if there is no intention to harm, Specialist Dr. Reyhan Tamer said, "Such games can lead to a loss of perception of reality over time and can turn into peer bullying. After a while, the child continues these behaviors without thinking that they might harm their friend or that they could also be harmed in the future. This negatively affects both their personality and their future life."

"FAMILIES AND SCHOOLS MUST PROTECT CHILDREN FROM SOCIAL MEDIA TRAPS"

Emphasizing that families and schools have a significant role in preventing such behaviors, Dr. Tamer stated that children should be kept away from dangerous trends originating from social media. Dr. Tamer highlighted the importance of directing them towards healthy activities such as sports, arts, and games. Dr. Tamer said, "When there is a loving family environment, play with friends, academic success, and a life filled with sports, the child can easily choose what is healthy."
