The defendant who slit the throat of the 1.5-year-old child has only one moment that he does not remember.

Habib Kara, who cut the throat of his friend's 1.5-year-old son with a razor blade in Eskişehir, set his own house on fire and attempted suicide by jumping from the terrace, is facing a prison sentence of up to 44 years. In court, Kara stated that he does not remember the day of the incident and said, "I do not believe that I committed such a crime. I think a conspiracy has been set up against me."

Habib Kara, who runs a pastry shop in Eskişehir, went to the house of his childhood friend İsmail Y. in the Yeşiltepe neighborhood in February.

HE CUT HIS FRIEND'S SON'S THROAT

At the house, Habib Kara took İsmail and Sibel Y.'s 1.5-year-old son in his arms and held a knife to his throat, forcing İsmail to call his brother Nurettin Kara and demand 10 million lira for him. Nurettin Kara said he did not have 10 million and that he needed to call the police, then hung up. Meanwhile, İsmail Y. jumped on Habib Kara to try to save his child. Habib Kara cut the child's throat with the knife in his hand. Later, İsmail Y. managed to take the knife from Kara's hand.

HE TRIED TO BURN HIS HOUSE, ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

Defendant Kara fled the house and went to his apartment on the top floor of a three-story building in the Şirintepe neighborhood where he lived. When he opened the natural gas and tried to ignite it with a lighter, his neighbors intervened. Defendant Kara then went up to the terrace of the house. There, he started a fire and then jumped down in an attempt to commit suicide. Injured Habib Kara and the boy he injured with the knife were taken to the hospital for treatment.

HE WAS ARRESTED AS SOON AS HE WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE HOSPITAL

After his treatment at Eskişehir Osmangazi University Medical Faculty Hospital, the suspect Habib Kara was taken into custody and was arrested by the court he was brought to at the courthouse. The Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit against the defendant Habib Kara at the 1st Heavy Penal Court. In the indictment, a prison sentence was requested for defendant Kara for the crimes of 'attempted murder against a child', 'qualified robbery', and 'damage to property'.

"I DON'T BELIEVE I COMMITTED SUCH A CRIME, I WAS SET UP"

During the hearing of the case at the Eskişehir 1st Heavy Penal Court, Habib Kara was brought in a wheelchair, while the family of the 1.5-year-old child, neighbors, and lawyers were also present in the courtroom. Defendant Habib Kara stated that he did not remember the day of the incident. Claiming that he was set up, Kara said, "I don't believe I committed such a crime. As a person who lost a child 2.5 years ago, I think I was set up by İsmail. I have no disagreement with İsmail. I don't remember anything. I want my release and acquittal."

UP TO 44 YEARS IN PRISON SOUGHT

The court prosecutor, in his opinion, requested a prison sentence of 23 to 44 years for defendant Habib Kara for the crimes of 'attempted murder against a child', 'deprivation of liberty', 'qualified robbery', and 'damage to property'. The hearing was adjourned after the defenses.

"WE WANT HIM TO BE PUNISHED"

İsmail Y. stated that he was very scared during the incident, fearing that something would happen to his child. İsmail Y. expressed that they wanted the defendant to receive the necessary punishment, saying, "He pulled the knife to my child's throat and cut it. He started to run away; of course, I couldn't chase after him. I needed to take my child to the hospital for intervention; his throat was cut. I left him, he ran away, and we took my child to the hospital. There was surgery and a hospital process."

Sibel Y. also stated that the defendant should receive the highest level of punishment, saying, "My child is currently scared and anxious. He hasn't recovered yet; he is not doing well. His health is not good; I am still continuing his check-ups. He is afraid of people; my daughter is receiving psychiatric treatment, and I am constantly taking her to the doctor, and she is on medication. I want his punishment to continue; I was very happy that 50 years in prison was requested. I hope his sentence does not decrease," she said.

"HE THREATENED OUR LIVES"

İbrahim Güler, a neighbor who lives in the same apartment as Habib Kara and whose house was damaged in the fire, stated that he prevented the defendant from burning the building and said:

"On the day of the incident, I heard the sounds when Habib Kara was trying to break the door upstairs, so I went up. He said with his own mouth that he opened the natural gas and threatened our lives, our building, and our lives. After struggling, he escaped from my hand and ran to the roof. He ignited gasoline or similar things he had prepared beforehand, setting the roof on fire. He threatened our lives, threatened my family's lives. If I hadn't been home, I wouldn't have my children or my family right now. Later, he jumped from the building. The damage to our house is significant."

The lawyer of the victimized family, İsmail Doğancan Çıra, stated that a decision would be made at the next hearing, saying, "In the incident where the defendant cut the throat of the 1.5-year-old child and subsequently attempted suicide by starting a fire, today the prosecution requested up to 50 years in prison for the defendant. A decision will be made at the next session.

"We will do our best to ensure that the defendant is punished to the fullest extent of the law," he said.
