European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated regarding the customs duties that the US will impose on the EU, "We will extend the suspension period of the retaliatory measures until the beginning of August. At the same time, we will continue to prepare new retaliatory measures."

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen answered journalists' questions at a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Brussels.

RETALIATION AGAINST THE US POSTPONED

In response to a question about the retaliatory measures expected to be implemented by the EU tomorrow, von der Leyen said, "The US sent us a letter containing measures that will come into effect if a solution is not found through negotiations. Therefore, we will extend the suspension period of the retaliatory measures until the beginning of August."

“At the same time, we will continue to prepare new retaliatory measures, and in this way, we will be fully prepared. In this process, the second and third elements are very important. One is to diversify trade relations, and the other is to focus on the single market. It is important to deepen the Single Market program because this is our safe harbor,” she said.

"WE HAVE BEEN WORKING TO RESPOND WITH RETALIATORY MEASURES FROM THE BEGINNING"

In response to a question about how to respond to the harsh tone in the US letter and the observation that dialogue with the US has not been beneficial, von der Leyen said, "As you know, we have a two-stage approach, and this is very important. We have always expressed very clearly; we prefer a negotiated solution. This stance has not changed. Now we will use the time we have until August 1 in this direction. In the second stage, we have been working to respond with retaliatory measures from the very beginning, and we are ready for that. If necessary, we can implement these measures. The two-stage approach works because we are prepared,” she replied.

"WE ARE PREPARED FOR ALL POSSIBLE SCENARIOS"

In response to a question about the possibility of activating the Coercive Preventive Instrument (ACI), which includes strict economic measures such as trade and investment restrictions against the US, von der Leyen said, "As you know, we have prepared our list of measures and reached an agreement on it."

“We have also prepared a second potential list of retaliatory measures, and it has currently been approved. The Coercive Preventive Instrument (ACI) was created for extraordinary situations; we are not at that point yet. This is very important. Now is the time for negotiations. However, this also shows that we are prepared for all possible scenarios,” she said.

"WE WILL WORK UNTIL AUGUST 1 TO REACH AN AGREEMENT"

In a statement she published on social media, von der Leyen said, "The 30% customs duty to be applied to EU exports will harm businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to work until August 1 to reach an agreement. At the same time, we are ready to protect the interests of the EU based on proportional retaliatory measures,” she stated.
