The President of the Consumers' Union, Mahmut Şahin, stated that if common hot water meters in apartment buildings are divided by the number of apartments, water bills would significantly decrease. Şahin expressed that building managers could implement this practice by applying to the water authorities.

Consumers Union President Mahmut Şahin stated that if the common hot water meters used in apartment buildings are divided by the number of apartments, there will be a significant decrease in water bills.

Şahin mentioned that central hot water distribution is provided to apartment residents in many cities. He explained that in this practice, cold water taken from a single meter is heated and distributed to the apartments, noting that residents pay extra because the water taken from a single meter is subject to tiered pricing.

When Common Hot Water Meters Are Divided Among Apartments, Bills Decrease

Şahin expressed that citizens will experience a significant decrease in their bills when they go to the water authority of their residing city and apply to have the water divided by the number of apartments, stating, "In our country, many buildings provide hot water distribution to apartment residents. Since tiered pricing has been implemented for water, in a building with 30-40 apartments, the water is inevitably evaluated and billed at the third tier. This needs to be divided by the number of apartments. In fact, such a practice exists, but it needs to be reported to the water authorities."

When Common Hot Water Meters Are Divided Among Apartments, Bills Decrease

IF HOT WATER IS DIVIDED BY APARTMENT, COSTS DROP TO 1/3

Şahin noted that the regulations are suitable in this regard, and that the water authority can easily divide the water meters among the apartments as a result of their inspections in the building. He stated: "Building managers need to go to the water authorities in their city and inform them that 'we are using the water meter for hot water.' The water authority then investigates this and, upon determining that it is used for hot water needs, prepares a report and divides it by the number of apartments. Therefore, it is priced at the first tier instead of the third tier. Many apartments do not apply to the water authority because they are unaware of this. They are paying excessive water bills. If this is done, payments will drop to 1/3. In this sense, we wanted to warn citizens; in fact, our citizens who are unaware of this situation are buying boilers or water heaters for hot water in their apartments. There is no need for that. There is already a central hot water application. With the method we are explaining, citizens will obtain hot water without paying excessive water fees.
