The identity verification of the male corpse found in the sea at Kadıköy beach yesterday has been completed by the Forensic Medicine Institution.
DNA TEST RESULTS MATCHED Due to the suspicion that the corpse belonged to Velat Can, who fell into the sea with his sister Ayşe Can on November 23, 2024, at Bebek Beach, DNA samples taken from the siblings' family were compared. As a result of the tests, it was determined that the corpse belonged to Velat Can.
WILL BE BURIED IN DIYARBAKIR The body of Can, taken from the Forensic Medicine Institution by family relatives, was taken to the Arnavutköy Cemetery Directorate morgue. It was learned that Can's body would be buried in Diyarbakır.
WHAT HAPPENED? On November 23, 2024, Ayşe Can (29), who fell into the sea while walking at Bebek beach, and her brother Velat Can (23), who jumped in after her to save her, went missing in the water. Their parents, who could not get news from them, reported the situation to the police. It was determined that the siblings, who came to Diyarbakır from Spain on November 14 for vacation, would return to the same country with their family on November 25, and they had stayed at a hotel in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul for this reason.
After the incident, the Coast Guard Command, Marine Police, Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), and Fire Department Underwater Search and Rescue teams initiated operations to find the two siblings, scanning the sea with divers and drones from the air. The siblings' family closely followed the search efforts, but no results were obtained from the search operations. Those who saw a person motionless in the sea at Kadıköy beach yesterday reported the situation to the police, and it was determined by the marine police that the person pulled from the water had lost his life. The corpse, identified as belonging to a male and without any identification, was taken to the morgue of the Forensic Medicine Institution.
