Due to the wars and tensions in the region, the government has decided to focus on different scenarios and has made the decision for TOKİ to construct new shelters in 81 provinces. This issue has also been discussed in cabinet meetings chaired by President Erdoğan, and initial steps have been taken in some cities, particularly in Ankara. In the studies, the shelter systems of Israel, Japan, and Switzerland have been cited as examples.

Turkey has accelerated its preparations against possible war and disaster scenarios with the increase of wars and tensions in the region. The aim is to create safe areas where civilians can be protected.

IT WAS ALSO ON THE AGENDA IN THE CABINET MEETING

In light of recent developments, Turkey's shelter infrastructure was put on the table. The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change has initiated a comprehensive study across the country. During the cabinet meetings chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, this issue was also brought up, revealing that the existing shelters are insufficient and there is a serious lack of infrastructure.

EXAMPLES FROM 3 COUNTRIES WERE EXAMINED

In the studies, the shelter systems of Israel, Japan, and Switzerland were cited as examples. In line with the decisions taken, it was decided that TOKİ would build new shelters in 81 provinces.

THE FIRST STEP WAS TAKEN IN THE CAPITAL ANKARA

According to information reported by NTV, the first steps were taken in some cities, especially in Ankara. The goal is for the shelters to be durable structures that can be quickly accessed during disasters and crises. Thus, the safety of citizens will be increased nationwide.

In fact, the requirement for shelters in Turkey is not new. The Shelter Regulation, which came into force in 1987, mandates the construction of shelters in buildings of a certain size. However, in practice, this obligation has largely been neglected. Many sections designated as shelters in various apartment buildings are either used as parking lots or storage areas.
