The diverticular bleeding that led to the hospitalization of famous actor Murat Cemcir in intensive care poses a significant danger, especially for individuals aged 50 and over. Bleeding that occurs in the wall of the colon often develops suddenly without any symptoms. The condition, which is usually detected incidentally during a colonoscopy, can lead to severe pain and heavy bleeding when complications arise.
Famous actor Murat Cemcir's admission to intensive care due to diverticular bleeding is emerging as a silent danger, especially for individuals over 50 years old. Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Esin Korkut warned against these bleeding episodes, which usually develop without pain but carry life-threatening risks.
DEVELOPS SUDDENLY
The process experienced by actor Murat Cemcir, who was hospitalized with suspected internal bleeding, has turned the spotlight on diverticular disease. Sharing important information on the subject, Prof. Dr. Esin Korkut stated, "Diverticular bleeding is the tearing or damage of the vessels in small pouch-like protrusions (diverticula) that form in the wall of the colon. It generally develops suddenly and presents itself as a painless intestinal bleeding."
NO SYMPTOMS
Pointing out that diverticula appear as small bubbles, especially in the colon, Prof. Dr. Korkut said, "Diverticula are seen particularly in patients over 50 years old with severe constipation issues. Most of the time, they are incidentally detected during colonoscopy without causing any complaints. However, when complications arise, they can lead to severe pain and significant bleeding."
BE CAREFUL IF THERE IS PALPITATION AND WEAKNESS
Emphasizing that diverticular bleeding usually appears as bright red fresh blood and should be distinguished from hemorrhoidal bleeding, Prof. Dr. Korkut noted, "Patients often present to emergency services with palpitations, weakness, and a general decline in their condition. For diagnosis, colonoscopy is performed, or in cases where diagnosis cannot be made with colonoscopy, tomography and CT angiography are applied, and treatment can be performed in the same session."
TREATMENT METHODS
Prof. Korkut pointed out that patients who are at risk, especially the elderly, those with constipation issues, comorbidities, and those using blood thinners, should be cautious. "For patients whose diverticula are incidentally detected or found after complications, increasing fiber intake, drinking plenty of fluids, exercising daily, and paying attention to smoking and obesity are of great importance. If blood thinners are used, alternative options should definitely be evaluated under medical supervision," she said. Prof. Korkut expressed that diverticular bleeding is not a simple bleeding and can be life-threatening, stating, "In 80% of cases, the bleeding can stop on its own. In necessary situations, endoscopic interventions or rarely surgical procedures are applied. After treatment, the patients' conditions are stabilized with close follow-up," she concluded.
