FLOOD DISASTER IN TWO ISLANDS OF GREECE
Heavy rains in Paros and Mykonos islands, located south of the Aegean Sea in Greece, caused flooding. The storm, which started yesterday afternoon and continued until the early hours of this morning, hit Paros and Mykonos. The heavy rainfall led to flooding in the islands that host popular tourist centers. Authorities decided to close schools and ban traffic except for emergency vehicles. Residents of the island were sent warning messages on their mobile phones, urging them to stay at home.
VEHICLES SWEPT AWAY BY FLOODWATERS
In the towns of Parikia and Naousa on the island of Paros, which were most affected by the flood, floodwaters swept away vehicles. It was reported that firefighting teams provided assistance to 13 people stranded during the storm, and there were no injuries or missing persons. Paros Mayor Costas Bizas stated, "The roads were damaged, and we need more heavy machinery to clean the streets." Bizas mentioned that the disaster occurred within two hours and that the floodwaters swept away approximately 40 vehicles.
SHOPS SUBMERGED
In Mykonos, where the flooding was less severe, heavy machinery was used to drain the floodwaters. Mykonos Mayor Christos Veronis announced that a state of emergency had been declared on the island. Shops near the shore were submerged, and boats were washed ashore.
EDUCATION SUSPENDED IN 6 ISLANDS
Due to adverse weather conditions and floods, education was suspended not only in Mykonos and Paros islands but also in Sire, as well as the islands of Sömbeki, Kelemez, and İstanköy, which are close to Turkey.
