A new development has occurred regarding the counter lawsuit filed by Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from the position of Mayor of Istanbul, for the annulment of his 'diploma' case. The 5th Administrative Court of Istanbul rejected the lawsuit filed by İmamoğlu.
The lawyers of Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from the position of Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), filed a lawsuit against the cancellation of his bachelor's degree by Istanbul University on May 6, 2025.
UNANIMOUSLY REJECTED
A new development has occurred regarding the aforementioned case. The counterclaim filed by İmamoğlu was unanimously rejected by the Istanbul 5th Administrative Court.
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
İmamoğlu's lawyer applied to the administrative court, requesting the suspension of the execution regarding the cancellation of the diploma by Istanbul University.
In the petition submitted to the Istanbul Emergency Administrative Court, İmamoğlu was listed as the 'plaintiff' and Istanbul University as the 'defendant'. The petition requested the suspension of the execution and cancellation of the decision made by the Istanbul University Board of Directors on March 18, 2025, regarding İmamoğlu's horizontal transfer, graduation, and diploma cancellation.
Since the execution of the process could cause damages that are difficult or impossible to remedy, the petition requested that the defense of the opposing party not be awaited or that the defense periods be shortened, and if necessary, that notification procedures be carried out by an official. It was also requested that the examination be conducted in a hearing. The newspaper announcement regarding the horizontal transfer by the Istanbul University Rectorship, documents containing İmamoğlu's high school diploma and university grades, horizontal transfer documents, ÖSYM guides, and legal opinions obtained from various academics were also submitted along with the petition.
In its decision on July 25, 2025, the court rejected the request for the suspension of the execution against the cancellation of his diploma.
