The Mayor of Bahçesaray district in Van, Ayvaz Hazir, was sentenced to a total of 3 years, 5 months, and 7 days in prison for committing crimes on behalf of a terrorist organization and publicly inciting others to commit crimes, although he was not a member of the organization. The court panel decided to "defer the announcement of the verdict" regarding the prison sentence.
On March 31, in the local government general elections, the decision hearing of the case opened regarding the "so-called self-governance" declaration made in the district on December 24, 2015, was held for 20 defendants, including Hazir, who was elected as the Mayor of Bahçesaray from the DEM Party.
DENIED THE CHARGES
In the hearing at the Van 4th High Criminal Court, Hazir, some defendants, and their lawyers attended, while some defendants connected via the Audio and Visual Information System. After the prosecutor presented the main opinion on the case, the defendants and their lawyers, denying the charges, requested acquittal.
CONVICTED OF COMMITTING CRIMES ON BEHALF OF THE ORGANIZATION
The court panel, after hearing the defenses, sentenced Hazir and 6 defendants to 3 years, 1 month, and 15 days for the crime of "committing crimes on behalf of the organization without being a member of a terrorist organization" and 3 months and 22 days for the crime of "publicly inciting to commit a crime."
In the case of the 3 months and 22 days prison sentence for the defendants, it was decided to "suspend the announcement of the verdict."
The court panel sentenced 11 defendants to 6 years and 3 months and 1 defendant to 5 years, 2 months, and 15 days for the crime of "being a member of an armed terrorist organization," while ruling for the acquittal of 1 defendant.
