The murder of Meliha Keskin by her ex-husband with a shotgun on a university campus in Kayseri highlighted the extent of femicides. Baki Ersoy from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) stated that he would work on a law similar to that of Italian Prime Minister Meloni, which imposes the heaviest penalties for crimes against women and children, and present it to MHP leader Bahçeli.
As Turkey's bleeding wound of femicides continues to evolve in scale every passing day, the murder of Meliha Keskin, a student of Folklore at Erciyes University in Kayseri and a mother of three, has caused an uproar in the public. Following the recent murder of Keskin, who was shot dead by her ex-husband with a shotgun in front of the faculty, a striking statement came from MHP Kayseri Deputy Baki Ersoy.
"WE MUST TURN AROUND THE PERCEPTION THAT PENALTIES ARE INSUFFICIENT"
In statements made after the murder, MHP Kayseri Deputy Baki Ersoy said, "It is absolutely impossible for us to accept crimes committed against women and children for any reason. Unfortunately, the perception that the penalties for crimes committed in society are insufficient has begun to take root. It is my duty, as a person elected as a deputy by your votes, to fight to turn this perception around, first for Kayseri and then for all of Turkey," he stated.
MHP PREPARING "MELONI LAW" FOR FEMICIDES
Pointing out Meloni's law, Ersoy stated, "I have seen that the proposal of Italian President Giorgia Meloni for the heaviest penalties to be imposed for crimes against women and children has been accepted by the entire Italian parliament and has become law. As a deputy of the province of Kayseri, where this horrific murder took place, I want you to know that I will work with all my strength to ensure that this law, which has been enacted in Italy, namely the heaviest penalties for crimes against women and children, can be enacted in Turkey without any reduction clauses, first by working individually and then by presenting this work to our esteemed party leader Mr. Devlet Bahçeli."
