A tragedy was witnessed in the Teesside region of England. Sixty-seven-year-old Shirley Nunn, who was terminally ill with cancer, took the heartbreaking decision to end her life along with her disabled son, Stephen. Nunn, who had cared for her son for many years, made this painful choice just one month after receiving her cancer diagnosis.
In a tragic incident in the Teesside region of England, a mother who learned she had only a few days left to live took her disabled son and herself away from life. The reasons behind the mother's decision were investigated in the Domestic Homicide Review published regarding the incident.
67-year-old Shirley Nunn had taken on the special care of her 50-year-old son Stephen, who suffered severe brain damage and serious mental and physical disabilities due to a horrific accident at the age of 11. In July 2021, Nunn was diagnosed with stage three cancer, and a month later, she was told that her illness was incurable.
It was determined that Shirley Nunn had overdosed on her prescription medications, taking both herself and her son away from life in their home in Brambles Farm, Middlesbrough. The lifeless bodies of the mother and son were found by a relative in Stephen's room.
The investigation revealed that Shirley Nunn was a "loving and caring" mother who received great support from her family. The report also emphasized that after the terminal cancer diagnosis, Nunn did not receive adequate emotional support and may have felt helpless as she saw no other options for her son's care.
As a result of the investigation, it was recommended that support systems for terminally ill patients and their caregivers should be strengthened to prevent similar tragic incidents from occurring.
