Today, an election will be held in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to determine the Speaker of the Assembly. The candidates for the position are Numan Kurtulmuş, Uğur Bayraktutan, Osman Cengiz Çandar, Mustafa Cihan Paçacı, and Mehmet Karaman. The election for the Speaker of the 28th Legislative Term's Second Session will be conducted by secret ballot. The elected speaker will serve for a term of 3 years unless an early election decision is made.

5 CANDIDATES COMPETING
The ruling party, AK Party, has nominated Numan Kurtulmuş, the Speaker of TBMM and Istanbul Deputy. The CHP has nominated Uğur Bayraktutan, the Deputy from Artvin; the DEM Party has nominated Osman Cengiz Çandar, the Deputy from Diyarbakır; the İYİ Party has nominated Mustafa Cihan Paçacı, the Deputy from Istanbul; and the New Path Party has submitted the name of Mehmet Karaman, the Deputy from Samsun, as a candidate for the Speaker of TBMM.
ELECTION WILL BE HELD BY SECRET BALLOT
The election, which will take place tomorrow in the TBMM General Assembly and will feature 5 candidates, will be conducted by secret ballot. In the first two votes, two-thirds of the total number of members will be required, and in the third vote, a simple majority of the total number of members will be sought. If a simple majority is not achieved in the third vote, a fourth vote will be held for the two candidates who received the most votes in that round. The member who receives the most votes in the fourth vote will be elected as the Speaker of TBMM.
SPEAKERS OF THE ASSEMBLY
So far, 30 deputies have held the position of Speaker of TBMM. If someone other than Numan Kurtulmuş is elected for the second term of the 28th period, that person will become the 31st Speaker of TBMM.
The longest-serving Speaker among those who have served since the first Speaker of TBMM and the founder of the Republic, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was Mustafa Abdülhalik Renda. Elected as Speaker for the first time in 1935, Renda served for 11 years by being re-elected continuously until 1946. The Speaker who served the shortest term was İsmet Sezgin, with a term of 2 months and 1 week.
The province that has produced the most Speakers of TBMM is Istanbul. Ali Fethi Okyar, Kazım Karabekir, Ferruh Bozbeyli, İsmail Kahraman, and Numan Kurtulmuş, all from the electoral district of Istanbul, have held the position of Speaker of TBMM.
