CHP Istanbul Deputy Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi won the case she filed for the cancellation of the music ban imposed after 1:00 AM following the coronavirus measures.

CHP Istanbul Deputy Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi won the case she filed for the cancellation of the music ban circular after 01:00 on May 10, 2022, despite the lifting of coronavirus measures. Regarding the issue, İlgezdi stated, "The court has just suspended the execution. However, what happened was to our musicians who struggled with bans for 13 months and to those working in venues."

MUSIC BAN LIFTED

CHP Istanbul Deputy Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi had filed a lawsuit against the Interior Ministry's circular regarding the music ban after 01:00 on May 10, 2022, despite the lifting of coronavirus measures. Winning the case for the cancellation of the circular, İlgezdi noted in her video statement:

ILGEZDİ: THE COURT HAS JUST SUSPENDED THE EXECUTION

"Delayed justice is not justice. After the measures were lifted, a music ban was imposed after 1 AM for our musicians who could not work at all during the pandemic. My request for a stay of execution for this unjust practice has just been concluded. The court has just suspended the execution. However, what happened was to our musicians who struggled with bans for 13 months and to those working in venues. While our musicians could not bring bread home, could not meet their children's needs, their 13 months were wasted arbitrarily and unlawfully."

"MUSICIANS COULD NOT WORK FOR 13 MONTHS"

On April 9, 2022, the coronavirus measures were lifted by a presidential decree. However, the Interior Ministry issued a circular regarding the music ban after 1 AM on May 10, 2022, despite being outside its authority. We immediately took this unjust practice to the Council of State. The ban after 1 AM was lifted on June 23, 2023. The court could only decide that this ban was an unjust decision. In other words, musicians could not perform their work unlawfully and unjustly for 13 months.

Due to the music bans, artists and venue employees could not bring bread home. The government did not provide any support to musicians and the sector. The "Let Music Not Be Silent" event emerged in December 2020, but musicians were paid amounts like pocket money. During this process, the government forgot about musicians. Even when limited openings were made in venues, the music ban continued. Today, the Council of State accepted that this music ban was unlawful. But can there be such delayed justice? If they had suspended the execution when we filed the lawsuit, musicians would not have faced the 1 AM ban for 13 months.
