Sixteen people were killed and 44 were injured when a bus overturned in the state of Alagoas in northeastern Brazil. The bus was reportedly carrying people attending the religious festival of Our Lady of Candelaria held in the state of Ceará.
According to news from the Brazilian press, a bus returning from the state of Ceara overturned on the AL-220 highway in the town of Sao Jose de Tapera. In the accident, 16 people lost their lives, including 4 children, and 44 others were injured, some of them seriously.
IT WAS CARRYING PARTICIPANTS OF A RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL
While the injured were transferred to nearby hospitals, an investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident. The bus was reported to be carrying people attending the religious festival called Our Lady of Candelaria held in the state of Ceara.
3 DAYS OF OFFICIAL MOURNING DECLARED
The governor of Alagoas state, Paulo Dantas, announced in a statement to the local press that a 3-day official mourning period has been declared in the state.
