At least 70 people lost their lives due to the explosion of a fuel-laden tanker in Niger State, Nigeria. The incident occurred when the tanker overturned and the surrounding community attempted to collect fuel.
At least 70 people were killed as a result of the explosion of a fuel-laden tanker in Niger state, northern Nigeria.
FUEL-LADEN TANKER OVERTURNED
Niger State Spokesperson for the National Road Safety Commission, Kumar Tsukwam, stated in a press release that the fuel-laden tanker overturned after losing control due to excessive speed on the Dikko-Maje highway in Niger state.
EXPLOSION OCCURRED WHILE LOCALS WERE TAKING FUEL FROM THE OVERTURNED VEHICLE
Tsukwam noted that the explosion occurred while locals were trying to take fuel from the overturned tanker.
AT LEAST 70 PEOPLE HAVE DIED
Tsukwam reported that at least 70 people died in the explosion, and dozens were injured, adding that firefighting teams have been dispatched to the area and rescue operations are ongoing.
In Jigawa state, northern Nigeria, more than 180 people lost their lives in October 2024 due to the explosion of a fuel-carrying tanker.
