The Russian press claimed that President Putin informed Ilham Aliyev about a coup attempt being prepared in Azerbaijan and that the head of the Presidential Administration, Ramiz Mekhtiyev, has been arrested. It was reported that Mekhtiyev tried to take advantage of the tension between Aliyev and Putin following the incident involving an Azerbaijani passenger plane that was shot down by Russian missiles, resulting in the deaths of 29 passengers.
One of Russia's leading newspapers, Novaya, has brought to light a claim that could resonate globally. The report alleges that a coup attempt in Azerbaijan was thwarted at the last moment by the intervention of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
THE SHOOTING OF THE PLANE CREATED TENSION BETWEEN THE TWO LEADERS
According to the information provided in the report, the tension between Aliyev and Putin following the downing of an Azerbaijani passenger plane in December, which was hit by Russian missiles and resulted in the deaths of 29 passengers, led high-ranking officials wishing to stage a coup in Azerbaijan to establish contact with Russia.
MEKHTIYEV'S PLAN TO OVERTHROW ALIYEV
According to allegations, Mekhtiyev took advantage of the tension between Moscow and Baku and informed Russian officials about the coup plan through his old connections, requesting Russia's support. According to Mekhtiyev's plan, he would establish a temporary body to take over the administration and manage the transition period, with himself at the helm.
AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN INITIATED ON CHARGES OF TREASON
According to information reported by Euronews, Mekhtiyev was arrested within a few days, and an investigation was initiated against him on charges of conspiracy to seize power and treason. The Azerbaijani news agency Minval announced that Mekhtiyev had been removed from his position in the Presidential Administration.
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
Relations between Moscow and Baku had soured after the Russian air defense shot down an Azerbaijani passenger plane in December last year, resulting in the deaths of 38 people. Putin had taken responsibility for the incident. Relations further deteriorated at the end of June when two Azerbaijani citizens lost their lives in coordinated Russian police operations in Yekaterinburg. After the meeting in Dushanbe, however, Aliyev stated that the relations between Russia and Azerbaijan were "developing successfully."
