In the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, the lives of many people changed overnight in Hatay, one of the cities most affected. Before the earthquake, 55-year-old Ali Bozoğlan, who resided in the Çekmece neighborhood of the Defne district, was caught in the 'Disaster of the Century' at his home. Bozoğlan, who is married and a father of three, saw his house destroyed in the earthquake.
HE MOVED TO A CAVE AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE Wanting to live away from people after the earthquake, Bozoğlan settled in a cave he discovered 2.5 years ago in the Yaylıca neighborhood of Samandağ, away from his family living outside the city. Just as he had organized his life in his home, Bozoğlan set up his routine in the cave, finding the peace and happiness he needed there.
IN A CONTAINER IN WINTER, IN A CAVE IN SUMMER Since the earthquake, Bozoğlan has continued his life in the cave, and the Hatay Governorship extended a helping hand by providing him with a container. Bozoğlan, who spent the cold winter days in his container, spent his summer days in the cave to cool off during the hot days.
“ORDER TO EMPTY THE CAVE” Bozoğlan, who was served documents by the municipal police of Samandağ to vacate the cave he started living in after the earthquake, will vacate the cave where he found peace and will continue his life in the container provided by the Hatay Governorship.
“WE WILL EMPTY THE CAVE WITH GOD'S PERMISSION” Ali Bozoğlan, who stated that he was served documents by the municipal police and that he had decided to vacate the cave, said, “I stayed in a few places after the earthquake. I wanted to stay in a tent because I saw a few different faces. I wanted to put the tent in a few places, but they didn’t allow it. Since they didn’t allow it, I settled in the cave, and I have been living in the cave for 2.5 years. When I came here, I arranged my belongings and cooked meals. I wash my clothes. I bring my water from outside to the cave. I take a shower outside here. Thank God, our governor of Hatay has taken care of me. They provided me with a nice container. They also furnished the items in my container. May God grant success to our state and our esteemed governor Mustafa Masatlı. A paper came from the municipal police, and the police teams came and inspected here. They said they would help me move these belongings. I have no means to move my belongings here; with God's permission, we will empty the cave,” he said.
“I WAS HAPPIER IN THE CAVE, I AM VERY SAD” Ali Bozoğlan, who felt peaceful during his time living in the cave and is sad to leave, said, “I am very sad to have to empty the cave. I decided to vacate it so that it wouldn’t be a hardship for them. I was happier in the cave. In the container, when you make a little noise, everyone complains. That’s why living in the cave makes me feel more peaceful. There is air and oxygen in the cave. I only had one electricity deficiency. I was going to fix that, but unfortunately, I can’t do it now. I will stay in the container provided by the Hatay Governorship. I thank the Hatay Governorship. Those who have faith in God are not afraid of anything and nothing happens to them. Those who are faithless and timid can be stung by a scorpion or a snake. Recently, when I came to the cave from Ankara, there was a snake in my bed; I took the snake out of my bed and told it to go away. A white snake had torn my bed. I took the snake out and let it go; it walked away. The snake didn’t touch me at all. I held it by one head and one tail and took it outside that way,” he expressed.
