In Ankara, 81-year-old Selvi Kurt learned that she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease while undergoing visa procedures to go to her son living abroad. This diagnosis was made in a private hospital in Gaziantep during a check-up in 2018. However, subsequent examinations at other hospitals revealed that she was not ill. The elderly woman has filed a criminal complaint against the hospital management and the doctors who made the diagnosis.
Selvi Kurt, an 81-year-old woman living in Ankara, learned while processing her visa to visit her son living abroad that she had been diagnosed with "Alzheimer's" in 2018 during a health check at a private hospital in Gaziantep.
TESTS REVEALED SHE WAS NOT SICK Subsequently, Kurt accessed the E-nabız system and found that prescriptions suitable for Alzheimer's disease had been written and that medications were being sold. Following this, she applied to Gazi University Medical Faculty Hospital, where it was determined that she did not have such a disease. Kurt received a medical opinion report stating that she did not have the disease, that she was medically competent, and that her mental faculties were intact. Through her lawyer, Kurt filed a criminal complaint with the Gaziantep Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against the hospital management and the doctors who diagnosed her, R.Y. and M.A.E.
"IT IS UNLIKELY FOR A PERSON TO RECOVER THEIR MENTAL HEALTH AFTER 7 YEARS" Kurt's lawyer, Kübra Bal, requested that an investigation be initiated against all responsible parties and that public prosecution be opened, with penalties applied at the "maximum limit." In the petition submitted to the Gaziantep Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that the medical opinion report obtained from Gazi University Medical Faculty Hospital indicated, "According to the opinion received, it is unlikely for a person who was not mentally healthy to regain their mental health after 7 years. The entry of false and severe illness data has deeply saddened Ms. Selvi and led her to strive to prove her health."
"MEDICATIONS WERE PURCHASED BY UNKNOWN INDIVIDUALS" Selvi Kurt, who also filed a complaint with the Ministry of Health, claimed that the report prepared for her was entered into the E-nabız system without her knowledge, and that medications that could only be obtained with special permission were purchased by unidentified individuals. Kurt also requested that the hospital's camera recordings be reviewed, statements from responsible individuals be taken, radiological images be verified by an expert examination, and that E-nabız records be obtained through official channels.
"WE LEARNED AT THE NOTARY, WE WERE SHOCKED" Selvi Kurt stated that her children live abroad while she stays in Ankara and Gaziantep, saying, "My sons live abroad. The power of attorney is in my name. I manage all the assets. I am also a victim of the earthquake, and I was going to go abroad to be with my sons. When we went to the notary to give a power of attorney to my son here, the notary said, 'Aunt, you have Alzheimer's, I need a report, I can't give it.' We were shocked at that moment, we were very upset. We went to Gazi Hospital. The doctor examined me, and we got our report. We visited all the doctors; none of them said, 'You are sick.' I have no diseases like diabetes or cholesterol. It was very hard for me to see this disease. We then consulted lawyers; I was diagnosed with such a disease in 2018. I have absolutely nothing like that. I am complaining about the hospital that gave me that report. If I were Alzheimer's, I should have died 7 years ago. I went to that hospital in 2018; they only recommended a device for my ear. They told me at the hospital, 'You have nothing.'
"MY MOTHER EXPERIENCED TRAUMA" Mehmet Ali Kurt, Selvi Kurt's son, stated, "After the earthquake, my mother applied for a visa because she wanted to go to my brothers living abroad. We learned about the situation when my mother wanted to give me power of attorney for her retirement and necessary procedures, saying, 'I can't come for 3-4 months.' We know which hospital she went to, but we sent her there for ear pain. It was only said that my mother had a 40% hearing loss in her left ear. When the notary said that, we applied to the hospital again; MR scans were taken, and 7-8 neurologists examined her. My mother has been going to Europe alone for years and has lived alone at home for years, and if she coughs, she tells us. We were all in shock. This is a deadly disease. My mother experienced trauma. For months, we have been saying, 'Mom, there is fraud, you are not sick.' The doctors at Gazi Hospital gave a 'healthy' report."
Selvi Kurt and her son Mehmet Ali Kurt "IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR A 74-YEAR-OLD ALZHEIMER'S PATIENT TO RECOVER AT 81" Kübra Bal, Selvi Kurt's lawyer, stated that the diagnosis made in 2018 does not reflect the truth, saying, "When we entered the E-nabız system, we see radiological images that do not belong to my client, which are not compatible with her body type and bone structure. At the same time, we see that a diagnosis of Alzheimer's and dementia was made about my client without any tests or examinations. We already have a report that contradicts this. However, a medication was prescribed for this diagnosis, and this medication was purchased by someone. There is a profit motive here, and there are crimes committed against the state that cause harm to the state. We believe that there is forgery in both official and private documents, qualified fraud, and the unlawful use of my client's personal data. There is no example of this in the medical literature. It is not possible for a person who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 74 to be completely healed at 81," she stated.
The management of the private hospital announced that they would not make a statement on the matter as the legal process is ongoing.
