The Çatalca Municipal Council changed the name of the street where the district mufti's office is located to "Volkan Konak Street" following the controversial post made by the mufti regarding the late Volkan Konak.
Master artist Volkan Konak passed away due to a heart attack he suffered on stage in Cyprus. The sudden death of 58-year-old father of three Volkan Konak deeply shocked his fans. His death plunged all of Turkey into mourning. Many fans flocked to the funeral, and tears flowed abundantly.
THE MUFTI'S WORDS SPARKED REACTION
Ahmet Mehmetalioğlu, the District Mufti of Çatalca, used the expression "He died on stage" following Volkan Konak's death.
Mufti Ahmet Mehmetalioğlu had shared on his social media account, "He died on stage. Now they will ask us; how did you know him? Our answer is this. We knew him like this. For us, those who drink burn for us as well."
Mehmetalioğlu later stated, "I thank my Lord for the discomfort I have caused to everyone who is an enemy to religion, the state, the presidency, and our sacred values."
THE PRESIDENCY OF RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION
Following the reactions, the Presidency of Religious Affairs announced that an investigation had been initiated against Mehmetalioğlu.
CHP AND AK PARTY MADE A JOINT DECISION
In the March session of the Çatalca Municipal Council held today, a proposal to change the name of Nar Street, where the Çatalca Mufti's office is located, was also put to a vote. In the vote, with the votes of both CHP and AK Party council members, the street where the Çatalca Mufti's office is located was named after Volkan Konak. Çatalca Mayor Erhan Güzel announced on his social media account that the name of Nar Street, where the Çatalca Mufti's office is located, has been changed to "Volkan Konak" street.
