THE IMPORTANCE OF SULEYMAN SHAH TOMB FOR TURKEY

The Suleyman Shah Tomb, located within the borders of Syria, is a spiritual and political symbol recognized by international law, representing the only exclave (homeland territory) of the Republic of Turkey outside its own borders, as stipulated by the Ankara Agreement signed in 1921 and the Lausanne Agreement of 1923.

It represents a deep cultural heritage for Turkish history and identity, as it houses the remains of Suleyman Shah, the grandfather of Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire; the waving of the Turkish flag and its protection by Turkish soldiers signify Turkey's sovereign rights and historical continuity beyond its borders.

IT WAS TRANSFERRED WITH THE SHAH FIRAT OPERATION

The Suleyman Shah Tomb was first moved from the Castle of Caber to Karakozak in 1975 due to dam waters; in 2015, it was transferred to the village of Eşme, very close to the Turkish border, due to security threats arising from the Syrian civil war through the "Shah Firat" operation. Although it changed locations during these processes, the status of the tomb as Turkish territory and the sovereign rights arising from international treaties have been preserved.
