In this context, the U.S. military deployed MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicles and approximately 200 soldiers to Nigeria to support operations against armed groups operating in the northern part of the country.
ONLY TRAINING AND INTELLIGENCE SUPPORT
U.S. and Nigerian officials stated that the deployed troops are not directly engaged in combat on the ground. According to the statements, U.S. elements are providing training and intelligence support to the Nigerian army. It was noted that MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles are used only for reconnaissance and surveillance activities, not for attacks.
"NOT COMBAT BUT SUPPORT ROLE"
Nigerian General Samaila Uba emphasized that the role of the U.S. is not combat-related. Uba stated that the joint intelligence center established between the two countries provides "actionable intelligence" to commanders on the ground, adding that the U.S. is assisting Nigeria in detecting, monitoring, and responding to terrorist threats.
OPERATIONS CONTINUE
