The recent explosions at the private Nifa Stone Quarry, established about 4 months ago in the Aşkarbeyli neighborhood of İskenderun district in Hatay, are causing anxiety among earthquake victims.
WINDOWS OF HOUSES WERE BROKEN, CRACKS OCCURRED ON THE FLOORS
As a result of the explosions, the windows of the houses were broken, and cracks appeared on the floors. Homeowners stated that they are complaining about the stone quarry due to the damage and threat they are experiencing.
THEY BARELY ESCAPED FROM THE STONES THROWN DURING THE EXPLOSIONS
On the other hand, moments when the stone fragments scattered after the explosion fell towards the gendarmerie and the local people were captured by a mobile phone camera. The footage showed gendarmerie personnel and neighborhood residents fleeing in panic.
"EXPLOSIONS HAPPEN EVERY MONTH, STONES ARE FALLING CONSTANTLY"
Mehmet Zont, a 57-year-old resident of the neighborhood, stated that stones fall on their heads during every explosion, saying, "During the explosion, stones fell on both the gendarmerie and us. We are disturbed; we have 27 acres of registered land here. The cracks in our house are evident, and they are constantly detonating. There is an explosion every month, and stones are falling continuously. We have been living here for a hundred years. My grandfather's and grandmother's graves are in this land. This stone quarry was opened only four months ago. They came later, but we are the ones who are disturbed. We want the government to intervene in this matter," he said.
"WE ARE AFFECTED MORE BY THE EXPLOSIONS THAN BY THE EARTHQUAKE"
Hasan Zont described the fear they experienced during the explosions with the following words: "We filed a complaint, and they came to inspect. Just a moment ago, there was another big explosion. The gendarmerie teams and we had to flee. Stones were falling on us, and we barely escaped. My brother is asthmatic; he can't stand this dust. Cracks have formed in our houses, and our windows are broken. We are affected more by the explosions than by the earthquake. We can't stay inside or outside. Every explosion sends stone fragments flying into our home. We want this stone quarry to be closed. Our resistance will continue until it is closed."
