In Bilecik, due to the price of watermelons being 1 lira in the fields and 10 lira in the markets, producers distributed approximately 50 tons of watermelons for free to citizens in front of the city center and neighborhood guesthouses.

The Osmaneli watermelon, registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2022, has left producers dissatisfied with prices this year, as watermelons bought for 1 lira from the field are sold for 10 lira in markets. While this situation persists, producers express that the intermediaries are the ones profiting from the gap. In response, Bilecik Municipality found a solution. By reaching an agreement with the producers, Bilecik Municipality collected the crops from the fields and distributed them for free to citizens in front of the city center and neighborhood community centers. In a similar initiative carried out last year, tons of watermelons were distributed to citizens while also providing support to farmers.

THOSE WHO HEARD QUEUED UP

Municipal deputy mayors, department heads, members of the municipal and provincial councils, and representatives of non-governmental organizations also participated in the distribution held in the city center. Citizens expressed their satisfaction with the offering and thanked Mayor Melek Mızrak Subaşı, the deputy mayors, and the staff.

Those who heard it was free rushed to the queue
