Fauja Singh, known as the first person over 100 years old to run a marathon, passed away at the age of 114 in a traffic accident in India. Singh, who began his running career at the age of 89 and broke world records, made history by completing a marathon at the age of 100.
Fauja Singh, known as the first centenarian marathon runner, passed away due to a traffic accident in India. The running club "Sikhs in the City," based in East London, confirmed the death of the 114-year-old athlete.
STRUCK BY A CAR WHILE CROSSING THE ROAD
Fauja Singh, who lived in London, was severely injured when he was hit by a vehicle while trying to cross the road during a visit to his birthplace, Beas Pind village in Punjab, India. Singh died at the scene.
RAN A MARATHON AFTER TURNING 100
Born in 1911 in the Punjab region of India, which was under British rule at the time, Singh worked as a farmer for many years. After the death of his wife, he immigrated to England with his son. He started running at a very late age, at 89. He completed his first marathon at the 2000 London Marathon in 6 hours and 54 minutes, breaking the record for the over-90 age category.
In 2003, he achieved his personal best by finishing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 5 hours and 40 minutes. In 2011, at the age of 100, he once again ran a marathon in Toronto, becoming the first person to achieve this feat.
