Farmers, including young people, who established greenhouses with state support in the villages of İmamoğlu district in Adana, have started production. These days, while farmers are on guard against agricultural frost under the cover, they have also begun harvesting tomatoes to earn income. The seasonal yield from the harvest ranges between 300,000 and 400,000 TL.
Within the framework of the Climate Resilient Forestry Project (İDOP) of the General Directorate of Forestry, 3 producers from the Üçtepe Neighborhood of İmamoğlu district, benefiting from ORKÖY supports, have started production with greenhouse projects.
ON ONE SIDE, FROST WATCH, ON THE OTHER SIDE, TOMATO HARVEST With the support of the Adana Regional and Kozan Forest Management Directorates, the young farmers who established the first greenhouses in the rural neighborhood, led by the village head, set an example. These exemplary farmers are currently on frost watch under cover while also starting the tomato harvest.
The head of the Üçtepe Neighborhood, Ali Şahin, who is working to keep the youth in the village, stated, "Three greenhouses were established for the employment of our youth in the villages by ORKÖY of the General Directorate of Forestry. The first harvest is being made now, and our young people have started production. We are continuing our efforts in our neighborhood to prevent our villages from experiencing migration."
"IT COST 600 THOUSAND TL, 500 THOUSAND TL WAS GIVEN AS GRANT SUPPORT BY OUR STATE" Ahmet Çolak (45), who started production with greenhouse farming, noted that he is now the boss of his own business with state support. Çolak said, "Our state had a grant support for greenhouses. With ORKÖY support, we established our greenhouse on 1 decare of land. We planted state-supported tomatoes, and we planted 2,000 seedlings. This is our first year, and it was a bit of a learning experience, but we harvested about 150-200 kilograms in the first harvest."
Çolak, who stated that he has been on frost watch every evening due to the cold weather affecting the region in recent days, said, "We have been on frost watch for about 10 days. This week, a very harsh cold has affected our region. Tomatoes are currently being sold in the greenhouse for 65-70 TL. Every job has its difficulties, but I never expected to establish such a business until now. This greenhouse cost 600 thousand TL. Our state provided 500 thousand TL as grant support through ORKÖY. Of this, 250 thousand TL is a grant, and 250 thousand TL is a single payment over 5 years, with zero interest," he explained.
Çolak also shared that initially, the locals said, "there won't be a greenhouse here," but he insisted he would succeed, and he did, explaining that he harvested with friends who also established greenhouses in a cooperative manner.
"IT'S MORE LOGICAL TO DO MY OWN BUSINESS THAN TO WORK FOR MINIMUM WAGE" Young farmer Ömer Şimşek (30) explained that ORKÖY support changed his life. Şimşek said, "We applied for this job with the support of our state. I liked it very much and I recommend it to my peers. This is our first year; we planted tomatoes, but different products like peppers can also be planted. It's more logical to do my own business in my village than to go to the cities and work for minimum wage," he stated.
"IT GENERATES 300-400 THOUSAND TL INCOME SEASONALLY" Şimşek highlighted the profitability of greenhouse farming, stating, "It generates 300-400 thousand TL in income seasonally. If there are two products, it is a business that provides an annual income of 800 thousand TL."
