The U.S. Department of the Interior, under the direction of President Donald Trump, changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America' and restored the name of Denali Mountain to Mount McKinley.
The U.S. Department of the Interior announced that the name of the Gulf of Mexico will be changed to "America Gulf" at the direction of President Donald Trump, and the name of Denali, the highest peak in North America located in Alaska, will be changed back to "Mount McKinley."
NAMES OF THE GULF AND MOUNTAIN ARE CHANGING
U.S. President Donald Trump continues to insist on changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to "America Gulf." In a statement made by the U.S. Department of the Interior, it was stated, "At the President's direction, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be referred to as the America Gulf. The highest peak in North America (Denali in Alaska) will once again bear the name Mount McKinley. These changes affirm the U.S. commitment to preserving its extraordinary heritage and ensuring that future generations can celebrate the legacy of its heroes and historical figures. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, under the Department of the Interior, is working to quickly update the official federal naming in the Geographic Names Information System to reflect these changes. The changes will take effect immediately for federal use."
MOUNT MCKINLEY
On the other hand, the name was given to Mount McKinley in Alaska, the highest peak in North America, to honor William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, who was assassinated in 1917. However, the Obama administration changed the name of Mount McKinley to "Denali" in 2015.
GULF OF MEXICO
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated at a press conference held last Tuesday that Trump could give the name he wanted to the gulf in the U.S., but the gulf would continue to be recognized as the "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico and the rest of the world.
