24-year-old Ömer Faruk Yiğit, a university student in Mersin, provided his IBAN information at the request of his neighbor, who introduced himself as military personnel, leading to 45 separate investigations against him for "fraud." Yiğit was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 6 cases. His mother, Elif Yiğit, said, "My husband became a leukemia patient due to grief. I lost both my husband and my son."
Mersin University Computer Programming Department student Ömer Faruk Yiğit (24) allegedly provided his account information after his neighbor K.Ç., who gained his trust by posing as military personnel, said, "I need to make an expense for my sister's wedding; but since my account is blocked, they can't send me money. Can you give me your IBAN information?"
20 YEARS IN PRISON AND 130 THOUSAND TL FINE After a while, 45 separate investigations were initiated against Yiğit for the crime of "fraud by using information systems, banks, or credit institutions as tools." In 6 cases where a decision was made, Yiğit was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison and a fine of 130 thousand TL, while he has been in prison for 1 year and has taken 4 of his cases to the appellate court.
"HE GAINS TRUST BY POSE AS A SOLDIER" Yiğit's mother, Elif Yiğit, attended a press conference held in front of the Ulus Victory Monument in Ankara with members of the 'TCK 158 Victims Platform.' The platform members demanded that Article 158 be included in the scope of reconciliation. Elif Yiğit stated that her son met K.Ç. while studying at university in Mersin in 2022, saying, "The person introduces himself as a soldier. He gains trust first. They go out together, eat together, and sit together. They spend time together every day. Then he says his cards are blocked. He asks my son for his IBAN and online banking information. He says, 'My sister is getting married. Money will come to my account. My brother-in-law, my father, etc. will send money. I need to do his shopping.' He convinces my son. Based entirely on trust, my son gives him his IBAN. Five days later, my son wants his account back. My son was called from the police station 15 days later, summoned, and taken away. They said he was involved in such a crime. My son, who had never even passed in front of a police station before, was an 18-year-old child. We were shocked. They took him away and sentenced him," she said.
"MY WIFE GOT LEUKEMIA FROM SADNESS" Elif Yiğit stated that her husband and family were greatly affected by the incident, saying, "My husband suddenly became a leukemia patient. A man who had nothing suddenly got leukemia, and I lost him a month ago. Punishments keep coming one after another. 45-50 cases have been opened. We are paying both the victim's damages and the judicial record fee. My family has been shattered. I don't know what to do. We are now asking our government for a solution regarding this issue. When our Minister of Justice mentioned this, it became a source of hope for us, and we are really urgently waiting for this problem to be solved. Some have mothers, some have children, some have husbands. We are all in the same situation, and we are all victims right now. My son's university life is over, everything is over, his dreams are left unfulfilled. He was taken to prison on the day he bought a ring for his girlfriend and proposed to her. I lost both my wife and my son," she said.
