University In Ukraine's Irpin Turns Into Shelter For Civilians Amid War

Educational facility provides sanctuary for hundreds of civilians, who are also offered food.

The National State Tax Service University of Ukraine in Irpin city has become a shelter for civilians amid the ongoing war in the country.
The city of Irpin of Kyiv bears the marks of deep marks of the war Russia launched on Feb. 24 as it has been subjected to the Russian attacks in the early days of the conflict, with its university, infrastructure and civilian settlements damaged.
The National State Tax Service University has turned into a place of sanctuary for Ukrainians as some 700 people reside on the basement floors of the university, where repairing and debris clearing are ongoing.
In an interview with Anadolu Agency, Valentina Uninets-Hodakivska, the rector, told what happened during the attacks.
Noting that some 5,000 students were educated in five faculties of the university, and all members of the educational institution mobilized following Russian strikes.
Some were trying to rescue others, Uninets-Hodakivska said, adding that others were busy rushing to rescue documents.
"Our cafeteria has been working since the first day (of attacks) and cooks for civilians. The humanitarian assistance centre also continues its operations," Uninets-Hodakivska added.
He further said that about 700 people were taking shelter in the facility. The university management decided to transfer students and officers to the branch in Storozhynets as no evacuation process was opened in Irpin.
"I realized that people had to be evacuated once the attacks intensified," he said, adding that Russian forces were advancing towards the university and he took the evacuation decision.
The lessons are ongoing via online courses, he said, and the university preparations are ongoing for the upcoming fall semester, with the removal of debris and repairing damaged buildings.
The educational facility planned to hold a Security Forum on Feb. 24, and a group of representatives from the Turkish Police Academic would participate in the event. However, this was postponed to a later period due to the eruption of war, he said.
Uninets-Hodakivska also said the Ukrainian people valued the support of Turkiye to Ukraine since the beginning of the warfare, and the administration was planning to open a department dedicated to Turcology.
According to UN estimates, at least 3,974 civilians have been killed and 4,654 injured since the war began on Feb. 24. The true toll is believed to be much higher.
According to the UN refugee agency, nearly 6.6 million people have fled to other countries, while more than 7.7 million have been internally displaced.
