Kerim Erişmiş, who has started producing saffron in Yüksekova district of Hakkari to combat unemployment, stated that the climate and soil are suitable for these products, saying, "If sufficient support is provided, agriculture can be revitalized." Erişmiş added, "If I expand my business, I can provide employment for at least 2-3 people. According to our research, the price of saffron ranges between 200,000 and 300,000 lira per kilogram."
While many people are migrating due to unemployment in Yüksekova, Kerim Erişmiş has started planting saffron and salep to revive agriculture.
"I EXPECT SUPPORT FROM THE GOVERNMENT" Stating that the climate and soil structure of the district are suitable for these products, Erişmiş has completed the first saffron harvest. Due to high costs, Erişmiş said he had to keep production limited and is expecting support from the government.
"WE WANT TO GENERATE INCOME FROM THIS PRODUCT" Kerim Erişmiş stated that if incentives are increased, many farmers could turn to these products, and he noted the following in his statement: "I am farming saffron and salep. We harvested the salep we planted last year in June. This year, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Provincial and District Agricultural Directorates, we planted saffron, and they provided grants. Now the flowering has started, and it will last for about two weeks. We want to generate income from this product. If this product increases in Yüksekova, it will create job opportunities and increase the orientation towards agriculture. Saffron is a cold-resistant plant, it can stay underground for three years, and up to seven new tubers can be obtained from each bulb. However, we have not received sufficient support. The cost of saffron bulbs is between 15,000-20,000 lira, and with this cost, it is not possible for farmers to produce on their own."
"IF I EXPAND MY BUSINESS, I CAN PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT FOR 2-3 PEOPLE" Erişmiş stated that he would expand saffron production if support increases, saying, "If I expand my business, I can provide employment for at least 2-3 people. According to our research, the price of saffron is between 200,000-300,000 lira per kilo. This product could be a great opportunity for Yüksekova," he said.
