Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki, who stated that a magnitude 7 earthquake could occur in Istanbul within two months, said, "The recent earthquake was not the expected major earthquake."
The earthquake measuring 6.2 that occurred on April 23 and the subsequent aftershocks have caused concern among citizens living in Istanbul. Experts are divided into two different opinions regarding the expected major Istanbul earthquake. One group of experts argues that no larger tremor is expected following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake, while the other group suggests that a larger earthquake is anticipated for Istanbul.
"WITHIN THE NEXT 2 MONTHS..."
Japanese Earthquake Expert Yoshinori Moriwaki also commented on these discussions. Participating in a live broadcast on Ekol TV, Moriwaki evaluated the recent earthquakes in Istanbul and made important warnings. Stating that the earthquake risk for Istanbul has not ended, Moriwaki said, "The recent earthquake was not the expected major earthquake. There is a possibility of a 7 magnitude earthquake within the next two months."
SOME LOCAL EXPERTS SAY "NO NEED TO PANIC"
Some local experts expressed that a major tremor is not expected following the recent earthquake, stating that citizens should not panic. However, like Moriwaki, some international experts argue that the next few months are critical for Istanbul and that necessary precautions should be taken.
"A MAJOR MARMARA EARTHQUAKE WILL OCCUR"
Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, who also participated in the live broadcast, stated, "There will be a major Marmara earthquake in the Sea of Marmara. It will happen one day. It has brought the tension period here a bit forward. It has caused a change in tension. When opinions become two, three, or four, saying 'I think this way' does not increase the opinion. Ask people on the street questions about earthquakes, and you will get 15 different opinions. When you talk about opinions in seismology, you conduct a research study, and that study has a bibliography. Science has a research unit. What methods did you use, how did you do it, what data did you collect? How did you interpret that data, and what conclusion did you reach?"
"LET'S NOT DECEIVE OURSELVES"
Stating that the recent earthquakes have brought the possibility of a major earthquake closer, Görür continued: "These earthquakes have brought the possibility of a major earthquake closer. It has deepened and accelerated the stress accumulation area. There are 40 kilometers, even 50 kilometers of the Kumburgaz fault that has not broken. There is a 20-kilometer section that has broken. The Marmara must break. Let's not deceive ourselves. I want people not to die. We must speak the scientific truths."
