The life of Berivan Gençdal, who accidentally drank a solvent chemical at the age of 2 in Diyarbakır, resulting in burns to her esophagus, turned into a nightmare. Having been forced to consume only liquid food for a long time, Gençdal underwent 70 surgeries. Most recently, after her stomach was connected to her throat, she regained her health following an 11-hour surgery and consumed solid food for the first time in 1.5 years.

UNDERWENT 70 SURGERIES
Gençdal, who suffered burns in her esophagus and had difficulty eating as a result, underwent 70 operations. Due to her condition, she has been forced to consume only liquid food for the last 1.5 years and applied to Kütahya City Hospital.
The young woman, examined by Prof. Dr. İbrahim Uygun, the head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Kütahya Health Sciences University, and his team, who specialize in the treatment of "butterfly disease," known as "epidermolysis bullosa (EB)," and esophageal disorders, was taken into surgery.
HER STOMACH WAS CONNECTED TO HER THROAT WITH AN 11-HOUR SURGERY
The young woman regained her healthy days with a successful operation lasting 11 hours. Prof. Dr. Uygun stated that with the successful 11-hour surgery, the irreparable esophagus of the young woman was removed, and her stomach was directly connected to her throat.
SHE WILL BE ABLE TO LIVE HER LIFE PROPERLY FROM NOW ON
Uygun stated that they performed very important surgeries related to the esophagus for many patients, especially butterfly patients, coming from both domestic and abroad, and said:
"Our patient has experienced very serious problems due to chemical burns in her esophagus for 24 years. She has undergone 70 surgeries until today. Due to the unresolved issues, we performed a major surgery here. We elevated the position of the stomach and connected it directly to the throat. Before the surgery, our patient could only be fed with liquid food. After the surgery, she can now eat and drink everything, and she will be able to live her life properly from now on."
Prof. Dr. Tayfun Aydın, the head of the Department of Anesthesia and Reanimation, who was part of the surgical team, also expressed their happiness for successfully performing a long surgery as a team.

Patient Berivan Gençdal stated that she has not been able to eat healthily until now due to the burns in her esophagus.
Explaining that she started eating solid foods after the surgery, Gençdal said, "I was having trouble swallowing. I was struggling while eating solid food. I was completely fed with liquid food. I was drinking the water from the meals. I had missed the meat that I used to dip bread into the water. Thank God, after the surgery, I can eat everything now."
Mother Mesude Beğde also expressed her happiness for her daughter's recovery after 24 years.
