An 8,000-year-old historical artifact discovered in the home of a resident in the Dicle district of Diyarbakır has astonished onlookers. After losing his wife, the citizen began living alone and realized he could no longer protect the artifact, so he reported the situation to the authorities. Museum teams that arrived at the house carefully transported the massive pitos, which weighs several kilograms, and placed it under protection.

A citizen in the Körmik neighborhood of the Dicle district in Diyarbakır reported to museum officials that he had a massive pitos (an ancient storage vessel) in his home. After making the necessary preparations, museum teams safely removed the large pitos from the house and transported it to the Diyarbakır Museum.
THEY CALLED THE DIRECTORATE: COME AND TAKE IT
Diyarbakır Museum Director Müjdat Gizligöl stated that a phone call was received at the directorate a few weeks ago, where the citizen mentioned that he lived in the Körmik neighborhood of the Dicle district, was elderly, and had a historical artifact in his home. Gizligöl said, "We immediately went to the site last week and conducted the necessary examinations. We indeed saw that there was a large pitos, that is, a storage vessel in his house. The citizen mentioned that he had lost his wife, was living alone, and could no longer protect this historical artifact, so we began preparations for its transportation. For this, we made a wooden box according to its dimensions. Later today, we went to the site, and with the help of an excavator, we loaded the pitos onto our vehicle without causing any damage and brought it to the Diyarbakır Museum," he said.
"IT WAS USED AS A SILO OF THE TIME"
After the studies related to the pitos were completed, Gizligöl stated that it would be exhibited in the museum garden, saying, "The pitos is quite large. It has a diameter of about 3 meters and a height of 1 meter. It was most likely used in its time in the garden, that is, to store crops in the field. Citizens would put the harvest or seeds for the next year inside the pitos and preserve them until the end of the year. In this way, they would replant the seeds in the soil. So this pitos was essentially used as a silo of the time. Such storage vessels have been widely used since the Neolithic period, especially during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Although some civilizations used pitos as graves, our pitos does not have grave characteristics. This pitos was made entirely for the purpose of storing grains and seeds," he expressed.
"THESE VESSELS HAVE EXISTED FOR 8,000 YEARS"
Noting that such storage vessels were used in villages until the 1970s and 1980s and have been completely abandoned in the last 30-40 years, Gizligöl said, "These types of storage vessels, which have existed for about 8,000 years, were especially used in fields, gardens, or cellars of houses during the Bronze and Iron Ages. After our scientific studies are completed, the pitos will be exhibited in the museum's garden. We thank the citizen from the Dicle Körmik neighborhood for his sensitivity towards cultural assets. We also invite other citizens in Diyarbakır to be sensitive in reporting historical artifacts that may be damaged to museum officials," he stated.
