Sergüzel Kahraman, the grandmother of 1-year-old Dolunaycan Kahraman who lost his life in a fire in Istanbul, said, "My daughter is a substance addict. I wanted to take her to the mosque, but I couldn't. She said, 'I'm taking the baby and going home.' She went to the man with whom she has a 'romantic relationship.' They are both using substances together. I want the investigation of the guilty parties, even if it is my child." The mother, Damla Kahraman, said, "My psychology is very disturbed. I couldn't save my baby, I'm sorry."
A fire broke out on Tuesday, March 17, around 06:00 in the entrance floor of a two-story building located on Ufak Köprü Street in the Sururi Mehmet Efendi neighborhood of Beyoğlu. While 1-year-old Dolunaycan Kahraman lost his life in the fire, his mother Damla Kahraman (19) and Kemal Ş. (53) were severely injured and taken to the hospital. After the work of the crime scene investigation teams, the baby's body was taken to the morgue of the Forensic Medicine Institution.
The day after, Damla Kahraman, who was discharged from the hospital, came to the Forensic Medicine Institution to collect her child's body. According to the claims of mother Kahraman, the fire occurred due to the electric heater tipping over. The mother fainted due to the smoke and could not escape with her baby.
"THE ELECTRIC HEATER TIPPED OVER, THE BABY STROLLER WAS ON FIRE" Mother Damla Kahraman, who lost her baby in the fire, said, "I went to my boyfriend's house in Eyüpsultan. After that, I lay down with my baby, the electric heater was on. The electric heater tipped over, the baby stroller was on fire. I couldn't escape through the window. When I stood up, the lights were on, I thought I could save my baby. I had to open the door because the fire started from the window. I tried to open the door, the electricity went out. After that, I couldn't see in front of me, I was quite affected by the smoke. I couldn't open the door and waited for the firefighters to come. The baby was on the sofa bed at that time. I fainted because I couldn't breathe. I couldn't hold my baby in my arms, I couldn't save him. The fire started around 5:30 in the morning. My boyfriend was sleeping inside, I didn't wake him up, he woke up himself. He was screaming, I think he was on fire. I couldn't see him. I couldn't get any information, I was fainting," she said.
Mother Damla Kahraman "I COULDN'T SAVE MY BABY, I'M SORRY" Expressing her sadness, mother Damla Kahraman said, "I'm in a bad situation, my psychology is very disturbed. I couldn't save my baby, I'm sorry. There's nothing I can do, I wanted to save him so much but I couldn't. My family told me that my baby died. They said, 'You have a funeral tomorrow.' It's sad," she expressed.
"EVEN IF IT'S MY CHILD, I WANT THE PERPETRATORS TO BE INVESTIGATED" Damla Kahraman's mother, Sergüzel Kahraman, said, "My daughter is a substance addict. I went with my daughter to take the baby to Eyüp Sultan. I wanted to take him to the mosque there, but I couldn't. She said, 'I'm taking the baby and going home.' She didn't go home, she went to the man she had a 'romantic relationship' with. They both use substances together. I want the perpetrators to be investigated, even if it's my child. I want the perpetrators to be prosecuted, no matter who they are. My daughter also has a 60% mental disability report. The man constantly gave her substances. She wasn't well when I found her," she said.
Sergüzel Kahraman "I SAW THE BABY IN AN UNRECOGNIZABLE STATE" Sergüzel Kahraman said, "We didn't see any burns on Damla at all. We said, 'Your baby is dead.' She was in shock, she didn't believe it. She said, 'At the hospital.' I came to the Forensic Medicine, I saw the baby, in very bad condition; in an unrecognizable state. The father of our baby is in prison. The man she had a romantic relationship with is definitely not the father of the baby," she expressed.
THE FUNERAL WAS TAKEN FROM THE FORENSIC MEDICINE INSTITUTION The body of baby Dolunaycan Kahraman, whose autopsy procedures were completed, was received by his family. It was learned that the funeral would be held today at Kasımpaşa Grand Mosque and buried at Ayazağa Cemetery.
