U.S. President Donald Trump had previously signed an executive order directing the military to be used more extensively and effectively in the fight against Latin American drug cartels. The U.S. government announced on August 8 that it had raised the reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from $25 million to $50 million.
It has been alleged that Maduro has led the "Cartel de los Soles," responsible for drug trafficking to the U.S. for over a decade, while the U.S. Treasury Department designated the "Cartel de los Soles" as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist on July 25.
