The renewed clashes between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated into a full-scale war involving F-16 airstrikes and heavy artillery fire. As the two countries accuse each other of targeting civilians, hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from the border regions. Cambodia reported at least 9 civilian deaths, while Thailand announced that 4 of its soldiers had lost their lives.
The second wave of attacks, which began along the border between Thailand and Cambodia and quickly escalated into a large-scale war, continues on its fourth day. The Thai army struck Cambodia with F-16 fighter jets and heavy artillery fire. Thai soldiers captured many villages and towns, planting their flag in the region. In response to these developments, Cambodian forces announced that they had launched a counter-offensive along the entire front line.
CEASEFIRE LASTED ONLY 5 MONTHS
The previous ceasefire, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, lasted only five months. As violence escalates again, Trump announced that he would seek to negotiate peace with both sides. However, developments on the ground are weakening diplomatic hopes. The two countries have accused each other of targeting civilians after months of ongoing conflicts.
F-16S BOMBED CIVILIANS
The Thai army reported that BM-21 rockets fired by Cambodia fell near Phanom Dong Rak Hospital in the Surin region, and patients were evacuated. The Cambodian army stated that Thailand conducted artillery and armed drone attacks in Pursat, and that mortar shells hit civilian settlements in Battambang. It was also noted that the Thai navy supported the artillery fire. Cambodia further claimed that Thai F-16s entered its airspace and bombed areas close to civilians.
ATTACKS BEING CARRIED OUT WITH DRONES AND ROCKETS
Due to increasing security risks, Cambodia withdrew its athletes from the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand. The country's army reported that attacks were carried out with drones, rockets, and tanks in several locations, including around the Preah Vihear temple. Both countries announced that hundreds of thousands of civilians had been evacuated from border areas. As of Tuesday night, Cambodia reported nine civilians killed and 20 seriously injured, while Thailand reported four soldiers killed and 68 injured.
"CAMBODIA GOVERNMENT HAS NO DEMAND OTHER THAN PEACE"
On the political front, hopes for peace are increasingly fading. The Thai Foreign Minister stated that he sees no possibility for negotiations and that there is no suitable environment for a third country's mediation. In contrast, a senior advisor to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the country is ready to negotiate at any time, saying, "The Cambodian government has no demand other than peace."
TRUMP WILL INTERVENE AGAIN
Trump stated at a rally in Pennsylvania that he would intervene again regarding the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia after listing wars he claimed to have previously stopped. However, the situation on the ground does not indicate any signs that the conflicts will cease in the short term.
