After drinking Turkish coffee at a café in Beyoğlu, 26-year-old engineer Ayben Ö. fell ill and was admitted to intensive care with suspected poisoning and intubated. While the young woman continues her fight for life, it has been revealed that the owner of the establishment had placed industrial dishwashing detergent in some bottles at the café, and the employee who prepared the coffee accidentally used the detergent instead of water.
In an incident that occurred in a café in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, 26-year-old engineer Ayben Özçilingir Turtura fell ill after drinking Turkish coffee and was taken to the hospital. The young woman, who was admitted to the hospital with complaints of shortness of breath and numbness in her tongue, was found to have been exposed to caustic substance (sodium hydroxide) poisoning.
FELL ILL AFTER DRINKING COFFEE
According to the information obtained, the young engineer went to a café in Beyoğlu with a friend. The two friends ordered Turkish coffee. After taking a sip of her coffee, Ayben Özçilingir Turtura suddenly fell ill and rushed to the restroom.
FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE IN INTENSIVE CARE
The young woman, who was taken to the hospital with complaints of shortness of breath and numbness in her tongue, suffered burns in her throat, esophagus, stomach, and lungs. After the initial intervention, she was taken to intensive care and intubated.
DETERGENT WAS PUT INSTEAD OF COFFEE
Following the incident, teams from the Istanbul Police Department conducted an investigation at the café in the Ömer Avni neighborhood of Beyoğlu. The investigation revealed that the café owner’s father, E.Ö. (52), had placed industrial dishwashing detergent in some bottles at the café, and the employee who prepared the coffee, M.A. (50), unknowingly prepared the coffee with the said detergent.
CAFE SEALED, OWNERS DETAINED
After the incident, the café owners G.S.Ö. (26) and S.N.Ö. (28) were detained. The café was sealed as part of the investigation. The suspects were then referred to the courthouse.
