Syria was shaken by intense airstrikes carried out by Israel yesterday afternoon. The attacks, which followed the Damascus government's rejection of the Druze's autonomy request in the city of Suwayda, targeted strategic sites in the capital, Damascus.
BOMBARDMENT LASTED 7 HOURS
Among the targets hit by Israeli jets were the General Staff building and the Presidential Palace. Six people lost their lives in the attacks, while 28 others were injured. The bombardment, which lasted approximately 7 hours, ended with a ceasefire between the Druze and the Syrian government.
"WE HAVE 2 OPTIONS IN FRONT OF US NOW"
Ahmed Shara, the President of the Syrian Transitional Period, appeared before the cameras for the second time after the attacks. Accusing Israel of trying to "create discord" within Syria, Shara stated, "We currently have two options in front of us: We will either confront Israel or we will fix our internal front."
"WE WILL NOT ALLOW THE DIVISION OF OUR COUNTRY"
Shara announced that commissions consisting of local groups and Druze wise men have been assigned to solve the security issues in Suwayda. Calling on the Druze people, Shara emphasized that external powers should not be allowed to create internal turmoil, stating, "Syria will not be the center of chaos. We will never allow the division of our country. We will not allow any external power to make you a party or to lead to internal divisions."
SPECIAL THANKS TO TURKEY
In his speech, Ahmed Shara also addressed Turkey's role, emphasizing both the support from the past and the recent mediation process. Shara noted that the United States, some Arab countries, and especially Turkey were effective in preventing the attacks: "This mediation brought the country out of the darkness of an unknown future."
Finally reiterating his special thanks to Turkey, Shara stated, "With the support of Turkey and other friendly countries, we are working together for the unity and stability of our country."
