A farmer in Kars, who planted heirloom barley seeds, set aside modern agricultural methods and turned to traditional seeds, and the results exceeded expectations. The farmer, who harvested 10-11 tons of barley from the field, once again highlighted the importance of heirloom seeds.
In the village of Büyükdurduran, located in the Akyaka district of Kars, farmer Neşat Sancak, who has been engaged in agriculture for many years, sought different alternatives in the face of rising costs and decreasing yields. Sancak, despite being told 'don't do it', planted local and national flagship barley seeds on his 22-decare land. These ancient seeds, carefully prepared and scattered on the field, adapted to Kars' climate and soil structure, sprouting in a short time. Farmer Neşat Sancar, with the combine harvesters he rented, began the barley harvest on his 22-decare land by saying Bismillah.
"I RECOMMEND IT"
Neşat Sancar, who had his field harvested, said, "Thank God for what He has given. I had the harvest of the flagship seed of 2025. It is very productive, very beautiful; some friends didn't believe it. Let them come and see, thank God I had it harvested, may God not embarrass us, I recommend it to my friends as well."
Sancar stated, "I obtained about 10-11 tons of barley seeds from the 22-decare field. We harvested an average of 500-600 kilos of barley per decare. May God bless, everything is evident, thank God," he said.
RECORD HARVEST FROM 22 DECARES
Approximately 10-11 tons of national and local flagship seed barley were obtained from the 22-decare field planted in Kars, with 500 kilos of barley harvested per decare. A noticeable difference emerged. The yield from the field planted with ancestral seed barley was much higher compared to modern hybrid seeds. Moreover, the quality and nutritional value of the obtained product were also quite satisfactory.
After the harvest, the barley was loaded onto tractor trailers via the combine harvesters. The barley-loaded tractors then headed towards the village.
